Tex Ritter Unreleased Songs Lyrics
1.Deck Of Cards (1948)

Friends, this is Tex Ritter with a strange story about a soldier
boy and a deck of cards.
During the North African campaign, a bunch of soldier boys had
been on a long hike and they arrived in a little town called
Casino. The next morning being Sunday, several of the boys went
to church. A sergeant commanded the boys in church and after the
Chaplin had read the prayer the text was taken up next. Those of
the boys who had a prayer book took them out. But this one boy
only had a deck of card and so he spread them out. The sergeant
saw the cards and said, Soldier, put away those cards. After
the services were over the soldier was taken prisoner and was
taken before the provost marshal. The marshal said sergeant,
Why have you brought this man here? For playing cards in
church, Sir. And what do you have to say for yourself son?
Much, Sir replied the soldier. The Marshal said, I hope for
if not, I shall punish you more than any man was ever punished.
The soldier said, Sir, I have been on a march for six days and
I had neither bible or prayer book, but I hope to satisfy you,
Sir, with the purity of my intentions. With that the boy
started his story.

You see sir when I see the Ace, it reminds me that there is but
one God. And the deuce reminds me the bible is divided into two
parts, the Old and the New Testament. And when I see the three,
I think of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. When I see
the four, I think of the four evangelists who preached the
gospel, there was Mathew, Mark, Luke and John. And when I see
the five it reminds me of the five wise virgins who trimmed
their lamps. There were ten of them, five were wise and were
saved and five were foolish and were shut out. And when I see
the six it reminds me that in six days God made this great
heaven and earth. And when I see the seven it reminds me that on
the seventh day God rested from his great work. And when I see
the eight, I think of the eight righteous people God saved when
he destroyed this earth. There was Noah, his wife, their three
sons and their wives. And when I think of the nine, I think of
the leapers our savior cleansed and nine of the ten didn't even
thank him. When I see the ten, I think of the ten commandments
God handed down to Moses on a table of stone. When I see the
king, it reminds me that there is but one king in heaven, God
all Mighty. And when I see the queen, I think of the Blessed
Virgin Mary, who is queen of heaven. And the Jack or knave is
the Devil.

When I count the number of spots of a deck of cards I find three
hundred and sixty-five, the number of days in a year. There are
fifty-two cards, the number of weeks in a year. There's four
suits, the number of weeks in a month. There's twelve picture
cards, the number of months in a year. There are thirteen
tricks, the number of weeks in a quarter.
So you see, Sir, my deck of cards serves me as a Bible, almanac,
and prayer book. And friends I know that story is true cause I
knew that soldier.

2.Big Rock Candy Mountain

One evening as the sun went down and the circus it was over
The tent came down and the funny old clown said, Boys, I'm now
in clover
I headed for a land that's far away beside the popcorn fountain
Now I'll see you all this coming fall in the Big Rock Candy
Mountain

In the Big Rock Candy Mountain there's a land that's bright and
fair
Where the doughnuts grow on bushes and there's lots of cookies
there
Where the dogs and cats are happy and the sun shines everyday
Where there's birds and bees in the bubble-gum trees by the
lemonade springs
And the whippoorwill sings in the Big Rock Candy Mountain

In the Big Rock Candy Mountain the houses are built of blocks
And the little steams of soda pop come trickling down the rocks
The soldiers there are made of lead and they are very brave
There's a lake of stew and ice cream too you can paddle all
around in a paper canoe
In the Big Rock Candy Mountain

In the Big Rock Candy Mountain the frogs have wooden legs
And the bulldogs all have rubber teeth and the hens lay
hard-boiled eggs
There's chocolate pie in all the trees and jam in all the lakes
Well I'm gonna go where the wind don't blow there's a big free
show
And there's candy snow in the Big Rock Candy Mountains.

So come with me and you're gonna see the Big Rock Candy Mountain

3.There's A New Moon Over My Shoulder (1945)

There's a new moon over my shoulder and an old love still in my
heart
I remember now that I'm older what you told me the day we had to
part
You promised with the new moon you'd be coming back to me
But many moons have passed since then I'm waiting patiently
There's a new moon over my shoulder and an old love still in my
heart

There's a new moon over my shoulder and an old love still in my
heart
Now I'm wishing I had been bolder then perhaps we would not be
so far apart
You promised you would write me but so far there's not a line
But still I wait and make believe that someday you'll be mine
There's a new moon over my shoulder and an old love still in my
heart

And so I keep on praying for your safe return someday
And that we'll be the same sweethearts as when you went away
There's a new moon over my shoulder and an old love still in my
heart

4.Jealous Heart (1945)

Jealous Heart oh jealous heart stop beating
Can't you see the damage you have done?
You have driven her away forever
Jealous heart now I'm the lonely one

I was part of everything she planned for
And I know she loved me at the start
Now she hates the sight of all I stand for
All because of you oh jealous heart

Jealous heart why did I let you rule me
When I knew the end would bring me pain
Now she's gone, she's gone and found another
Oh I'll never see my love again

Through the years here memory will haunt me
Even though we're many miles apart
It's so hard to know she'll never want me
Cause she heard your beating jealous heart

Many times I trusted you to guide me
But your guiding only brought me tears
Why oh why must I have you inside me
Jealous heart for all my lonely years

5.Cattle Call

When the cattle are prowlin'
And the coyotes are howlin'
Under the western sky
The cowboy is singin'
His spurs are a-jinglin'
As on the trail he rides

Chorus:
Woo...hoo, hoo hoo hoo hoo
Woo...hoo, hoo hoo hoo, hoo hoo hoo
Woo...hoo, hoo hoo hoo, hoo, hoo, hoo hoo, hoo, hoo

Many hours will he ride
On the trail far and wide
He's goin' home this fall
Don't care 'bout the weather
His heart's light as a feather
He sings to the cattle this call

Chorus

When the new day is dawning
And he wakes up yawning
Making his coffee strong
Makes his bed in a roll
Down the trail he will stroll
Singing his cattle the his song

Chorus

When the cattle are bedded
And the saddle horse shedded
Nothing seems to be wrong
He casts up his eyes
To the stars in the skies
He sings to the cattle this song

Chorus

6.Jealous Heart

Lyricist:Jenny Lou Carson

Jealous heart, oh jealous heart, stop beating
Can't you see the damage you have done?
You have driven her away, forever
Jealous heart, now I'm the lonely one

I was part of everything she planned for
And I know she loved me at the start
Now she hates the sight of all I stand for
All because of you, oh jealous heart

Jealous heart, why did I let you rule me
When I knew the end would bring me pain
Now she's gone, she's gone and found another
Oh, I'll never see my love again

Through the years here memory will haunt me
Even though we're many miles apart
It's so hard to know she'll never want me
'Cause she heard your beating jealous heart

Many times I trusted you to guide me
But your guiding only brought me tears
Why, oh why, must I have you inside me
Jealous heart for all my lonely years

7.Blood On The Saddle

Lyricist:Everett Cheetham

There was blood on the saddle
And blood all around
And a great big puddle
Of blood on the ground

A cowboy lay in it
All covered with gore
And he never will ride
Any broncos no more

Oh, pity the cowboy
All bloody and red
For the bronco fell on him
And bashed in his head

There was blood on the saddle
And blood all around
And a great big puddle
Of blood on the ground

8.There's A New Moon Over My Shoulder

Lyricist:Lee Blastic, Jimmie Davis, Ekko Whelan

There's a new moon over my shoulder
And an old love, still in my heart
I remember, now that I'm older
What you told me, the day we had to part

You promised, with the new moon
You'd be coming back to me
But many moons have passed since then
I'm waiting patiently

There's a new moon over my shoulder
And an old love, still in my heart

There's a new moon over my shoulder
And an old love, still in my heart
Now I'm wishing I had been bolder
Then perhaps, we would not be so far apart

You promised you would write me
But so far, there's not a line
But still I wait and make believe
That someday, you'll be mine

There's a new moon over my shoulder
And an old love, still in my heart

And so I keep on praying
For your safe return someday
And that we'll be the same sweethearts
As when you went away

There's a new moon over my shoulder
And an old love, still in my heart

9.High Noon

Lyricist:Dimitri Tiomkin, Ned Washington

Do not forsake me, oh my darlin'
On this, our weddin' day
Do not forsake me, oh my darlin'
Wait, wait along

I do not know what fate awaits me
I only know I must be brave
And I must face a man who hates me
Or lie a coward, a craven coward
Or lie a coward in my grave

Oh, to be torn twixt love and duty
S'posin', I lose my fair haired beauty
Look at that big hand move along
Nearin', high noon

He made a vow while in state prison
Vowed it would be my life or his'n
I'm not afraid of death but, oh
What will I do if you leave me?

Do not forsake me, oh my darlin'
You made that promise as a bride
Do not forsake me, oh my darlin'
Although you're grievin', don't think of leavin'
Now that I need you by my side

Wait along, wait along
(Wait along)
Wait along, wait along
(Wait along, wait along, wait along, wait along)

11.We'll Rest At The End Of The Trail

We're weary and tired, our work is all through
But we'll rest at the end of the trail
We'll stand by the fire when there's nothing to do
When we rest at the end of the trail

If we feel like roping, we'll hitch to a star
So just keep on roping, it's not very far
We're weary and tired, our work is all through
But we'll rest at the end of the trail

The road is mighty dusty, old pal
The sun is sinking down below the range
We're still together, trusty old pal
Riding the trail so strange

If we feel like roping, we'll hitch to a star
So just keep on roping, it's not very far
We're weary and tired, our work is all through
But we'll rest at the end of the trail
